File Compression & Encryption:

Website: WinRAR

Our file compression and decompression tests were split into two halves to cover a broad spectrum of performance. The first test we ran was to compress and encrypt a 176MB MPEG-2 source file with the highest quality compression ratio. Secondly, we compressed and encrypted the folder of 400 photographs with the same compression settings.

On average here, the same can't be said for large file compression where the EP45-DQ6 drops several seconds behind the Asus P5Q and even the older generation P35 boards as well. In small compression, things are a little different and the Gigabyte sits closely behind the Asus and ahead of the older boards. In both cases the DDR3 X48T-DQ6 is still faster thanks to its memory bandwidth and latency advantages.

File Decompression & Decryption:

The two RAR archives created during the compression and encryption tests were then decompressed and decrypted.

Decompression performance is very good though – the Gigabyte stretches slightly ahead of the Asus using large files and equals it with small files. And on average, it’s the fastest DDR2 board we've tested in this particular test.
